LATIN
Meetings: Held weekly on Fridays for beginners and fortnightly on Wednesdays for Revivers, in members' homes. The Latin group was primarily set up to provide a knowledge of the language whose uses include deciphering mottoes, dates and inscriptions appearing in the various historic buildings visited by the Architecture and similar groups. It is divided into two sections, absolute beginners and those who did Latin at school and wish to revive their knowledge. We are lucky to have two excellent tutors who are experienced in adult education and aim to make learning this beautiful and useful language as enjoyable and painless as possible.

LOCAL STUDIES
Meetings: On 3rd Wednesday of month 2.30 – 4.00pm, at members' homes
Our objective is to research and discover places of interest that have contributed to our local heritage and culture. We meet to consider venues for our next visit and two members then research that location and arrange an itinerary for the following month, to include a guided tour by a local historian if appropriate. At the following meeting we discuss the highlights and agree the next village/town to explore. We visit about 5 sites a year and over the past three years we have been to 15 locations including Edenbridge, Seal, Old Oxted and East Grinstead.

LONDON STUDIES

They usually take the form of a guided and/or walking tour around areas/buildings of interest as detailed below. Recently we have visited Eltham Palace, Royal Courts of Justice, Refurbishment of Kings Cross area, Bank of England, Westminster Abbey, Greenwich and Canary Wharf to name but a few. We meet at a central point for coffee and usually have lunch at the end of the visit when we can share our thoughts on an interesting day.

MAHJONG
Meetings: Thursdays - 10.00 - 12.00 in The King's Arms, Westerham
The group is very much a case of developing skills. All levels are welcome. Mahjong can be played with either three or four to a table. If we have five, we take turns to sit out, so no one will be disappointed. More experienced players will give support to a beginner if appropriate. The meanings of the markings on the tiles are explained in the first introductory lessons. Scoring takes some time to learn, and we are making progress. There is no carry over from one session to the next. Beginners are usually able to play at a simple level after a few introductory sessions. The duration of a game is variable, luck as well as skill playing a part.

MILITARY HISTORY
Meetings: The third Thursday of the month at 2pm in Westerham Hall
The Military History Group (MHG) currently consists of around 11 members and the focal point of our meetings is a presentation to the group. These are very diverse, ranging from the Neolithic era to the 21st Century and In addition to presentations by group members, we also invite guest speakers, arrange visits to museums and, on occasion, field tours. Future guest speakers are being identified and visits to places of interest further afield are also being considered, such as the Bovington Tank Museum in Dorset with an overnight stay.

OPERA APPRECIATION
Meetings: Vary according to activity
The group meets roughly every 6 weeks, usually in Edenbridge. The format of meetings vary, we may watch excerpts of an opera and discuss the performance and compare different productions. Sometimes we invite people associated with opera to talk about their experiences and, of course, when appropriate we arrange trips to performances both live in a theatre or streamed at the cinema. New members are welcome especially those who may not have had much experience of this amazing form of musical entertainment!

PLAY READING
Meetings: 2nd and 4th Wednesdays afternoons, each month
Members suggest a play which the Group tries to access via Kent libraries. Members are allocated parts on the basis of those known to be attending, making sure that everyone has a fair turn. We don’t rehearse but members know in advance of their roles. The Group has read ‘The Deep Blue Sea’, ‘When We Are Married’ and ‘Separate Tables’ to mention a few. We have a little discussion about what we’ve read.

POETRY 1
Meetings: We meet once a fortnight on Fridays from 2-4pm in members' homes
The Group provides its own copies of the chosen poet or anthology as it is vital for the appreciation of a poem to have the words in front of you. We have recently read the Oxford Book of English Verse and are now well into the Penguin Book of American Verse. This group pre-dates Westerham U3A, as it has been going for 23 years but obviously the members have changed!
